Private - but Never Alone

Frida Spikdotter · May 6, 2026

A freshly hatched idea is fragile before it’s had the chance to grow. In those early, tentative stages, the outside world can feel almost threatening. You protect your idea so that no one can trample on it, diminish it, question it.

You shield it and keep it alive, like a tiny little secret seed.

But as we know… overprotectiveness tends to have a suffocating effect on the things we love. We hold on too tight. The oxygen runs out. I think that’s how many creative ideas die.

We love them to death. We don’t dare let them out - because what if they don’t measure up? Does that mean it’s us who aren’t good enough?

They say there’s no such thing as a stupid question, but that doesn’t always ring true. Too many of us carry the bitter experience of the opposite. Teachers who made us feel small, parents who criticised, managers who questioned (and in the worst cases, stole your idea…?), friends who turned out not to be real friends after all…

The feeling of being exposed and made to feel foolish has a paralysing effect on our creativity. And while conversation with another person is one of the most valuable things we have, sometimes you just don’t want that.

Sometimes it’s too soon. It’s too fragile, too close to the heart, too personal.

I’ve seen this countless times in my creative coaching work. How fear and shame throw a spanner in the works of people’s capacity.

Yesterday I had a conversation with a client, and it was she who made me see that Friday actually holds the answer.

You get to be at peace with your process for as long as you need.

Until you’re ready to take it out into the world.

And leave everyone utterly amazed.
